Why Has Taiwan Launched a Nomad Visa?

This program stems from the Taiwanese government’s vision to attract and retain foreign digital professionals. Officials aim to boost the local economy and tourism while positioning Taiwan as a hub for innovation and global talent. Notably, Taiwan’s National Development Council has emphasized collaboration with regional partners, including South Korea and Japan, to enable seamless travel between destinations.

In the long term, Taiwan plans to:

  • Expand incentives for digital nomads, such as investment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
  • Establish programs to support innovation and creativity among foreign residents.
  • Facilitate up to 400,000 remote workers by 2032, with a subset eligible for an ‘Employment Gold Card’ after one year.

What Makes Taiwan Unique for Digital Nomads?

Taiwan’s appeal extends beyond its economic opportunities. Digital nomads can immerse themselves in:

  • Cultural Heritage: Explore ancient temples, bustling night markets, and historical landmarks.
  • Natural Beauty: Enjoy stunning national parks, beaches, and the subtropical climate.
  • Safety and Progressiveness: With progressive LGBTQ+ policies and Taipei ranked as the world’s third safest city by Numbeo’s Safety Index, Taiwan offers peace of mind for foreign residents.
  • Convenience: Efficient high-speed rail and public transport make exploring the island seamless.

Application Process

Applicants can submit their applications online or through:

  • Overseas Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices (TECO), Taipei Representative Offices (TRO), or Taipei Missions.
  • In Taiwan, applications can be filed with the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA).
